BOHOLANOS pause from work on Tuesday, July 22 as the entire province celebrates 154th Bohol Day.

The day has been declared a non-working special public holiday for Bohol by virtue of Republic Act 7683, enacted by the Senate and the House of Representatives February 23, 1994.

The day is actually 154 years after Bohol was officially separated along with Siquijor from Cebu.

The Spaniards also recognized Bohol as a separate politico-military province, a tradition that was carried on by the American regime until present time.

To commemorate the day, Capitol, through Acting Governor Julius Caesar Herrera bared that the activities lined up for the day include a formal commemorative program with Philippine Vice President Noli de Castro as guest of honor and speaker.

The day starts with a flag raising ceremony at Plaza Rizal, followed by the unveiling of the marker for Capitol’s Water Treatment Facility nearby.

Activity shifts to the Bohol Cultural Center at 8:30 for a holy mass followed by the event’s commemorative program.

Herrera also said that the commemorative program includes the conferment of Datu Sikatuna Awards for outstanding individuals and institutions.

From there, at 1:00 pm, another activity: the Bull Ride Fun unleashes at the Tagbilaran City Government Compound where a Cultural show is also slated at 8:00 in the evening.

Her song, Realize, was the first one i heard about her. And it was nice.. then came, Bubbly, which i really really really like, right now.

Her music is so layback, the type of songs you would like to hear during rainy days, during daydreaming moments (urgh!), or simply during lazy afternoons. Not so typical either, she’s this guitar-playing-artist that allows you to read her mind because she writes her own songs. Just like my favorite artist, Michelle Branch, who i haven’t heard anymore… she’s a beauty that never bores. She’s unique.

Her instant fame is amazing, actually - it is through the internet. Through her Myspace profile, her song Bubbly was played more than 42 million times (according to wikipedia) and became famous manifested by being featured on iTunes stores as a free “Single of the week”.

TUESDAY would be a non-working holiday in Tagbilaran City as it celebrates its Charter Day, July 1, 42 years after it earned it in 1966.

The declaration is based on Republic Act 8267, which declares the day non-working special public holiday for the City of Tagbilaran.

The city, which has gone a long way, after it became a town since February 9, 1742 came by virtue of a decree by Spanish Governor General Gaspar dela Torre.

Formerly called San Jose de Tagbilaran, the town was formally established as a separate town from Baclayon then.

Historically too, the old settlement of a 15th Century Bohol, the place forms part of the “Bool Kingdom”, states the city website.

Sometimes touted as a place called “tinabilan”, which means “screened”, the city is also shielded on the southwest by Panglao Island and north by Maribojoc mountain ranges.

Tradition also tells that the word “Tagbilaran” was derived from “tagubilaan”, a contraction from two local words tagu (to hide) and Bilaan (a Muslim marauder tribe). Literally, it means a place hidden from the pillaging Muslims.

On July 1, 1966 by virtue of R.A. 4660, Tagbilaran became a chartered City.

As a chartered city, Tagbilaran was established by a Congressional act and is then governed by its own charter from where its leaders exact powers rather than look up to the provincial, regional or national laws. It also enjoys a higher Internal Revenue Allotment compared to towns, a political analyst said.

“This is the main reason,” he pointed out, “why by its own charter, the city has achieved a significant level of development in view of the increase in its share of internal revenues.”

Meanwhile, another holiday for Bohol is on the offing.
